Brittsense
Overturning deep seeded narratives that continue to permeate the contemporary consciousness, Brittsense uses her camera as a tool for combatting the falsehoods associated with people, places, and communities. Her distinctive documentary-style subverts intrusive voyeuristic eyes with the energy of compassion allowing the authentic spirit of her subjects to shine through.
From her inaugural project “222ForgottenCities” into her present work, Brittsense has captured images that help us rethink our understanding of impoverished, dangerous, and ‘bad; labeled cities and communities. From their stereotypes that are systemically promoted to the world to the way these traumas are embodied within the people, we often neglect to acknowledge the vibrancy and beauty that these neighborhoods and individuals possess. It is this revelation that Brittsense embodies in her images.
Each photograph captures a haunting viscerality. Whether monochromatic or a rich colorful palette, her subjects dominate the confines of the composition with their radiance. It becomes clear that Brittsense is embracing her subjects beyond their physicality but their psychology, their internalized essence, and their authentic selves. An undeniable sense of hyperfocus emanates. Amidst their candid nature, her intention to capture the truth, the symbolism, and the emotions that create connections beyond the borders of these environments ignites a sense of empathy in her viewers. Acknowledging the oftenoverlooked impact, she simultaneously raises awareness to change the discourse surrounding these communities while uplifting them with empowering images of self-reflection.
Brittsense, born Brittani Sensabaugh, is bringing her authentic Deep East Oakland energy to the world of photography. Her signature documentary style reconceives societal preconceptions. The result, empowering images that strengthen a sense of identity and community for melanated people. Her work keeps her continually traveling to unearth narratives of new places and people. To date, her work has been widely published and has been exhibited across the country with solo shows at Oakland’s BettiOno Gallery and Bishop Gallery in Brooklyn. Brittsense is currently represented by Richard Beavers Gallery.
