Michael Vasquez
Artist Statement
Michael Vasquez is recognized for his expressive mixed-media scenes of urban culture and gang members. He has been described as a visual anthropologist who explores the codes and rituals of masculinity and community-building, such as tattoos, bandanas, hand gestures, and maps. Vasquez has cited his own single-parent upbringing and the search for an extended family within his community as inspiration for his work. He received a BFA from New World School of the Arts in 2005 and has participated in a number of museum exhibitions, including two traveling shows organized by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery: “Portraiture Now: Staging the Self” (2015) and “The Outwin 2019: American Portraiture Today.” His work is held in Florida public collections, including NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami.
