Xavier Daniels
Xavier Daniels pushes societal complacency through his paintings that challenge contemporary narratives of the Black male experience. With a traditional realistic technique, Daniels pulls from his own life experiences and relationships to create poetic imagery of Black men. Heightened through intense textural elements, expressive brushstrokes, and manipulations of space, his method of abstracting his subjects subverts the perpetuated stereotypes that often consume the Black male identity. As the flesh tones swirl with pastel tones, plays of neutral grays and whites, and the occasional vibrant tones of majestic purples, Daniels tells the story of perseverance and brotherhood.
The authentic experience of the Black community tends to be lost under the weight of stereotypes of athletes, absentee fathers, and criminals. Black men find themselves in a state of invisibility not only to society itself but in the conversations surrounding their own lives, their culture, and their legacies. Daniel’s portrayal of these men returns them to these conversations about their own identity. Through plays of color and seemingly unusual poses, he undermines these media-portrayed and generationally instilled notions with paintings infused with a sense of genuine emotion and vulnerability. The work speaks to more than social status but to the danger these falsehoods pose to mental health, where Black men suffer a sense of uncertainty that carries with them. Just as the portraits Daniels creates are complemented by fields of negative space and colors that evoke deep psychological responses, his viewers experience the sense of absence that is physically, culturally, and emotionally imbued within the Black journey.
Xavier Daniels is a Miami, Florida native. who studied at Rhode Island School of Design and completed his bachelor’s degree in Art at Morehouse College. Xavier earned his master’s degree in Illustration from Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD).
Since 2011, Xavier has served on the faculty at Atlanta Technical College and has offered leadership to hundreds of art students. Community interest is evident by Xavier’s 13-year tenure as a firefighter. His ideas of brotherhood and dignity were formed from his experience as a firefighter which also influenced his figurative paintings. In his work, he aims to create a visual narrative to what black men are internalizing. He is answering the question, “How do black men feel about themselves in a world that expects less from them than it does from other groups?”
Captivating portraiture has become one of Xavier Daniels vehicles for illuminating the prodigious stories of today’s Black communities. In his work, emotion is a symbol of truth. Daniels employs a form of visual poetry as he instigates the onerous conversations that will inevitably help us conquer these seemingly insurmountable challenges of race and stereotypes. The system is broken, and Daniels asks us to find a way forward together through empathy and compassion.
Xavier’s exhibited across the United States including Ambrosia Gallery, Eyedrum, and Art on 5. His art has been featured in magazines such as Art X Official and is a published illustrator.
He currently lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.
